Hartford Times Image Collection

 Collection
Identifier: MS-Times-Image

Scope and Content

Photographs were used to illustrate news articles on a wide range of topics, but most are related to Connecticut and of these the majority are of people, places, and events in Hartford. While the collection includes some early historical photographs, the bulk of the material dates from the 1950s through the 1970s. It is therefore a rich source for images of social change, protest, and urban renewal. The organization of the collection maintains the original subject categories established by the newspaper.

Historical Note

The Hartford Times was established in 1817 as an anti-Federalist newspaper. Throughout its history it remained more liberal in outlook than the Hartford Courant, Hartford’s other principle newspaper. The Times closed abruptly in 1976 after years of financial struggle. Its photograph morgue was eventually acquired by the Hartford History Center at the Hartford Public Library.
