Scope and Contents
The Hartford History Center Photograph Collection (HColl) is a composite collection composed of many separate donations of photographs relating to Hartford places, people and events. Large numbers of photographs document the Flood of 1936, the Hurricane of 1938, the Hartford Circus Fire, and urban renewal during the 1960s and 1970s. Many of the early images are copy photographs. Most major buildings in the city are well-documented, often in multiple photographs that reflect changes over time. The portrait collection is not strong and many of the individuals are not identified. Photocopy books of the images are available in the Hartford History Center; a subject index in the form of a card catalog is also available.
