Scope and Content
Collection contains 19 issues of the Connecticut Common School Journal. The earliest in the collection is from January/February 1852, and was edited by Henry Barnard. Other issues are from 1854, 1855, 1856, and 1858. Barnard continued as editor through the 1856 issues. Charles Northend edited the 1858 issues. Printers included Hartford's Brockett & Hutchinson; Case, Tiffany and Company; L.M. Guernsey (New Britain); and F.C. Brownell.

Historical Note
The Connecticut Common School Journal began in 1838. Publication was suspended between 1842 and 1851. The journal was renamed the Connecticut Common School Journal and Annals of Education in 1854 and started a new series, but the old volume numbering continued in parallel. The shorter title The Connecticut Common School Journal continued to be used on the title pages of the bound volumes. The Connecticut Common School Journal ran until 1866. The original Connecticut School Journal was first published by the Connecticut State Teachers' Association as the Connecticut Common School Journal. In 1875 it combined with the Maine Journal of Education, the Massachusetts Teacher, the Rhode Island Schoolmaster, and the College Courant to form the New England Journal of Education. The combined publication was named the Journal of Education. In 1952 the Journal was sold to the Boston University School of Education. The Journal of Education is the country's oldest continuously published journal in the field of education.
