Biographical / Historical

Miss Draper's Seminary was a school for young women located in Hartford under principal Julia Draper. It opened circa 1832 and was in operation at least through 1861. According to the school's catalogues, "the object of Miss Draper is to promote the physical, intellectual, and moral improvement of the young ladies committed to her charge." Primary class subjects covered reading, writing, spelling, geography, grammar, arithmetic, commerce, US history, and composition. Additional academic subjects were added in the first, second, and third years of higher classes, and for an additional fee, tuition was offered in English, music, piano, French, Spanish, Latin, drawing, ornamental needlework, mezzotint, and Poonah painting. Board and tuition were $180 per year in 1844.

Susan Edwards Booth (1843-1916) was born in Ballston Spa, NY, and attended Miss Draper's Seminary in Hartford. She later lived in New York City.
