Biographical / Historical

The Avery Memorial Theatre (later the Aetna Theater) is an auditorium located in the Wadsworth Atheneum. It opened in 1934 during the tenure of museum director Arthur Everett "Chick" Austin, Jr. The theater opened with the premiere of Gertrude Stein and Virgil Thomson's opera Four Saints in Three Acts, notable for its all-Black cast.
