Scope and Content

Scrapbooks contain newspaper and magazine clippings, printed ephemera such as theater programs and tickets, and some photographs. Subjects represented included a wide variety of topics related to Hartford and its history. A group of nine scrapbooks compiled by Walter S. Garde include material relating to the Garde Theater from 1901-1937; two additional scrapbooks include programs from the Capitol Theater. A group of four scrapbooks are related to Bushnell Park. Four scrapbooks compiled by the Hartford Fire Department in the 1970s are primarily related to fire prevention. Three volumes relate to the Connecticut Charter Revision in 1945-1947 and one scrapbook was compiled by John L. Bonee for the Capitol Region Planning Agency between 1966 and 1970. Eighteen volumes are entirely comprised of newspaper clippings. For additional details, see the subject headings listed below.

Permission to publish from the Hartford Public Library Scrapbook Collection must be obtained in writing from the Executive Director of the Hartford History Center, and a copy of the published work may be requested by the Hartford History Center. The Hartford History Center reserves the right to refuse permission to publish, etc. to those who have not complied with its policies. Use of the collections will normally not be permitted for the purpose of promotion of commercial products and services or political campaigns. Hartford History Center at Hartford Public Library reserves the right to limit the number of photographic prints/captures and to restrict the use or reproduction of rare, fragile, or valuable objects. Some scrapbooks are in poor condition and will require special handling.

Historical Note

The Hartford History Center’s collection of scrapbooks was compiled by different individuals and organizations for a variety of purposes. Most scrapbooks contain newspaper and magazine clippings from local papers and reflect the interests of the compilers.
